It was over a year ago when “Bartleby’s Book of Buttons,” a delightful digital storybook for iPad, hit Apple’s App Store. Created by Hawaii-born artist Henrik Van Ryzin and his wife Denise, I found the app to be a delightful, wonderful digital storybook for the iPad. That first release was dubbed “Volume I: The Far Away [...]
When I’m not blogging, I’m browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on October 20th: CityCamp Honolulu: CityCamp Honolulu (CCHNL) is an unconference focused on innovation for municipal governments and community organizations. It is a collaborative effort to re-imagine the way the web, applications, technology and participation will shape the future of Honolulu. [...]
Hawai‘i's got a very mixed bag when it comes to the types of snacks we love, thanks to the many cultures that have made the islands their home over several centuries. The colors, sounds and flavors of their mother countries traveled with them to Hawai‘i, becoming a part of the local culture that's still enjoyed [...]
While the fireworks ban might have put a damper on New Year's festivities in Hawai‘i, Hawaii Aloha Travel (HAT) still managed to end 2011 with a bang! It was a nice close to a decade of hard work, dedication and overall success – finishing stronger than before despite the rocky economy. Always a good time [...]
The whales are here! And this time, they're closer than ever, as evident by the crowds of people and camera crews that flocked to Honolulu Harbor a few days ago. With whale season upon us, we were lucky enough to have a mother humpback whale and her baby hang out for a day after following [...]
“Take, Leave, Whatevas” – the most recent approach to encourage recycling in Hawai‘i has got a little bit of attitude. You'll be seeing handmade wire mesh baskets piggybacked on most public trashcans in O‘ahu. And accompanying signs that read, “HI-5. Take, Leave, Whatevas” get straight to the point. Take the recyclable out of the basket [...]
Sometimes our view of the beautiful mountain ranges in Hawai‘i can get a bit hazy, particularly when volcanic fog, or vog, is in town. It's a form of air pollution created when volcanic gases mix with oxygen and moisture and can best be seen when it's sunny outside. Voggy weather on O‘ahu's west side makes [...]
With our calm beaches and kid-friendly attractions (like the new elephant exhibit at the Honolulu Zoo!), Hawai?i is the perfect family vacation getaway. Parents, however, can always use a little getaway for themselves, finding it difficult to have those much needed date nights when on vacation. Here's some good news…Sound the trumpets…Aloha Sitters is here [...]
The sweeping shots of Hawai‘i's scenic beaches and mountains are a staple of the new Hawaii Five-0 television program. But often it is a small detail that makes the setting seem authentic — like what to drink with a plate lunch. Bottom's up! Coconut water's popular all over Hawai‘i. In one episode, Chin Ho Kelly [...]
On almost any day in Hawai‘i, a spectral palette of tropical hues splash the islands with colors as vibrant as the rainbows we see stretching between valleys. Ahh, beautiful Hawai‘i nei! From the lush greens of the Ko‘olau mountains to the calming blues of the ocean, the islands shine as bright as diamonds in the [...]
The North Shore of O‘ahu has well-awoken from its summer slumber. The winter months (November to February) are here, and that means monster waves and crowds of spectators swarming the once quieted beaches; cars zooming up and down while surfers unite in the ocean line-ups. The North Shore is alive once again. This famous Hale‘iwa [...]
WASHINGTON and MOJAVE, Calif. - History was made Sunday, October 10, on the path to the launch of the first commercial spaceliner with news of the first successful glide involving the mother ship, WhiteKnightTwo, and smaller spaceship, the VSS Enterprise, which safely separated at an altitude of 40,000 feet before returning to earth. Everything was great ! This is the comfortable living room area which led out to my Oceanfront balcony.

Everybody loves a full stocked mini-bar, except [...]
Nearly 150 people — including both city and state government officials and employees, as well as local programmers, designers, artists, and activists — were drawn to CityCamp Honolulu on Saturday. Even though it was the weekend, and even though there was a UH home game on the calendar, it was heartening to see so many people willing [...]
When I’m not blogging, I’m browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on November 22nd: Wave Gliders Begin Historic Swim Across Pacific: Yesterday, four Wave Gliders (self propelled robots, each about the size of a dolphin) left San Francisco for a 60,000 kilometer journey. Built by Liquid Robotics, the robots will travel together [...]
After nearly two years of planning and preparations, APEC is finally landing in Honolulu. This week’s events brings government leaders from around the world (including Punahou grad and U.S. President Barack Obama) to the Aloha State. That definitely means heightened security (which will disrupt traffic and other aspects of everyday life), and supposedly means escalated [...]
